Did you know that we spend around 33 per cent of our lives sleeping? This means where we sleep is important to our sleep hygiene and overall well being. Since you start and end your day in it, make sure your bed is made for sweet dreams.

How? First up, size matters. Go for the biggest bed you can fit into your room design, without compromising on ease of movement. Next, consider your needs, circumstances and preferences. Do you have small children who often climb under the covers with you? A mattress too high won’t do. Are you a reader who likes to sit up with your book before sleep time? A plush, padded headboard is what you’re after. However, if Zen-like minimalism is crucial to your sleep routine, a low Japanese-style base is ideal for you.

Next, consider your bedroom décor, as this piece of furniture will be the focal point. A four-poster style or super-high headboard makes a dramatic, regal statement. A luxury bed should be upholstered, with hotel-level comfort. A wooden design with rattan inlays is perfect for a colonial or tropical décor look.

Once you’ve decided on your overall colour scheme, you can pick the right bed sheets and bed covers. Solid, monochromatic colours give a pleasing, uniform sense of calm. Or opt for patterns to pick up on accent colours and add a sense of whimsy, romanticism or quirk. Complete your bedding with comfy cushions and textured throws, and your resting time will reward you daily.
