PLINTHS

Do you like your home to display your carefully curated art and décor items like a mini museum of your own? Then you’ll want to add plinths to your list of furniture items to invest in. In architecture, the term refers to the lower slab at the bottom of a column. In home décor, they are pedestal-like pieces with broad bases made from wood, marble, metal or other materials. They’re typically short (although not always), so they can be used to make rooms with low ceilings feel taller.

Plinths can be used for many things – they can be used to raise furniture; to add another height dimension to a room; in place of traditional side tables; or to showcase collectibles, decorations or art that isn’t wall art. The great thing is that you can change the items they showcase seasonally, or on a whim. Got a gorgeous potted orchid that has just bloomed? Place it on top in the entranceway to brighten up your arrival home. Entertaining guests for a sumptuous dinner party? Create the right mood with a candelabra of lit candles taking centre stage on top. Or, if you’re eating outdoors, move yours outside so guests have somewhere to set their drinks down.

Above all, plinths are great for displaying things like ceramics, vases, ornaments or small sculptures. Just make sure yours isn’t likely to get knocked over by placing it out of the way of foot traffic.

While traditional materials like wood, stone or marble work well, these pedestals come in many types. Got a collection of retro homeware to showcase alongside your retro furniture? Go for a funky pedestal in a cheery colour, such as orange or red, to match.
