An objet d’art refers to any decorative item, usually small and three-dimensional, that isn’t wall art. From ornaments and sculptures to spheres and quirky figurines, there are many ways to incorporate them into your home décor

In an office or living room with classic furniture, you can’t go wrong with a chess set or box. Go for something truly unique, such as a set crafted from stainless-steel, aluminium and wood with a shiny black and nickel finish. Other old-world touches to incorporate into the room include a classic wall clock and an armillary sphere – those early astronomical devices used to represent the celestial circles.

An objet d’art is also a nifty way to incorporate metallic accents into your décor, especially during the festive season. For example, a golden pumpkin around Halloween or a set of cheerful golden birds around Christmas. For gorgeous glints all year round, go for a sculpture that will fascinate you to look at on a daily basis. For instance, an abstract silver face sculpture inspired by the artist Picasso’s portraits will draw your eye on a shelf, table or windowsill. Ensure your wall mirrors are also framed in silver to have a cohesive metallic look.

Going for an Asian-inspired aesthetic? You could pick a cobra sculpture or a decorative mirrored elephant ornament, to evoke India of yesteryear. As elephants are social animals, grouping a pair or a trio together is a natural choice. Or bring to mind places like China, Vietnam or Nepal with a three-dimensional, multi-tiered pagoda sculpture that can stand proud on a mantelpiece or side table. For an immediate sense of calm, you could always choose a serene Buddha objet d’art. Feng Shui enthusiasts might want to heed the following rule: place your Buddha in a prominent position and have it face inside the room, not looking out.
