When it comes to dramatic lighting, nothing makes a statement more than a one-of-a-kind chandelier. It differs from a pendant light, in that it usually has multiple shades and light sources all connected on one frame.

When choosing, consider four things: where you’ll put it; how high the installation will be; what style will work best; and how bright the light is. While they’re conventionally placed in dining rooms, these statement lights can go in almost any room.

When you think of a chandelier, a typical scene may come to mind: An opulent foyer with a winding staircase and massive, traditional light dripping with crystals on its many arms, suspended overhead. But the term refers to a range of styles, including super modern chandeliers. These days, you’ll get styles ranging from minimalist to industrial and from contemporary furniture to rustic farmhouse.

Chandelier shapes differ, too. Some are simple or rectangular. Others are hollow rings, like ring-light jewels glittering overhead. Sputnik designs, resembling atoms, starbursts or dandelions, are great for mid-century modern décor schemes. Caged designs, where the bulbs are within a metallic frame, can add a steampunk mash-up of old and urban. Is high-end glamour more your style? You can’t go wrong with a silvery light, dripping in gorgeous glass. Glass is lighter and more affordable than crystal, but it gives off that same traditional look.

If you’d prefer that the light emitted is subtle rather than too dazzling, you could always use a complementary floor lamp or set of wall lanterns in the room.
