When considering a new home, house hunters or tenants often factor ‘storage space’ in their list of what’s most important. However, some may overlook places that have limited built-in cupboards because they forget that other furniture items – dressers, in particular – can save the day. These are essential pieces for storing things, whether in the bedroom, living room, hallway or more.

So, what’s the difference between a chest of drawers and a dresser? While both are used for storage and have drawers, the latter is wider and shorter. Typically, they have six large drawers. Ultimately, which of the two you choose should be based on the size of the space you’re furnishing.

Dressers work best in sleeping quarters. In a large bedroom, a dresser table acts as a focal point, and is a convenient station for storing toiletries and accessories needed when getting dressed for the day. If the room’s big enough, you could get a matching chest set to bring cohesiveness to the space. The bonus? More storage.

To style your dresser, anchor it with a pretty mirror to start. It will reflect light, adding a sense of space. Add a unique mirror that complements the other décor in the room. For added colour, add a small vase of fresh or dried flowers. Stack up some of your favourite books or wedge them between two unique bookends. Finally, place a small tray down for displaying personalised décor accessories and keepsakes, such as a jewellery box, collection of shells or crystals, and tea lights for ambience at night.
