The cover you put on the floor can make or break a room. Flooring decisions are about more than looks. You should consider durability, comfort, and cost too.

Your first question may be, a handmade rug or carpet flooring – which is best? Carpet is fixed to the floor from wall to wall; rugs can be moved about and usually only cover a certain area. Many prefer moveable mats as they are more versatile and gather less dust, since air can flow beneath them and they can be cleaned under.

In any room, they can make a considerable style statement. For example, in an exotic themed living room, an exotic rug with an ornate pictorial design will be the most admired work of art in the space. In an open-plan living area with classic furniture, a design featuring patterns will bring added texture to the space. Does your kitchen feel a little clinical? A kitchen rug will bring much-appreciated warmth.

In terms of style, round rugs are great for under round or square tables. Got an oval or rectangular table? Match it with a rectangular shape underfoot.

If you’re a fan of indoor-outdoor living, you’ll want to make your balcony, patio or garden a comfortable space fit for entertaining or simply chilling out in. An outdoor rug will do the trick, for sure.

A handmade rug is a tactile investment piece that can be passed down. It is generally one of two types – a hand-woven rug, or a hand-knotted rug. A hand-knotted rug, such as a Persian rug, is the most labour intensive to make, hence it’s more costly.

A hand-woven rug is typically more affordable, but just as beautiful. Adding a hand-woven rug to your room is one of the easiest ways to give it a makeover. The design you choose for yours can be simple, such as a neutral grey one with textural interest. Or you can make a style statement with a bold design featuring vivid pops of colour.
