Pendant lights – also known as drop, suspended or hanging lights – usually have a single bulb with some kind of shade lessening the glare. They usually hang from a rope, chain or collection of chains or ropes. This individual aspect distinguishes them from chandeliers, which have more bulbs, though pendant lights are often hung in groups for added impact.

They’re functional and aesthetic, and can be used for any room. That said, pendant lights work particularly well in kitchens, workspaces, dining rooms and foyers. As they can work as spotlights, you can place them strategically to illuminate a table or desk, a reading chair, an artwork or décor tableau. Just be sure you choose the right kind of lightbulb for the desired effect. Remember that energy-saving LEDs are much kinder to the environment.

Designers really apply their expertise when designing pendant lamps. Many of them resemble pieces of gorgeous jewellery, with their glittering metallic and glass. They’re the ultimate in luxury lights. Other brass or steel options are far more industrial, and are made to be showstoppers in contemporary, edgy spaces. For understated elegance, you might prefer styles that combine the concept of a glass tea-light holder with a hanging light. These can be hung in a group of three or more, at varying heights. Alternatively, keep them at the same height but spaced apart in a row. This works well over a kitchen island or dining table.

Got a roomy area to decorate? Don’t be afraid to go big. Large scale pendants with generous shades and lanterns make a big impact towards your contemporary furniture decor.
