As with curtains, the cover you put on the floor can make or break a room. Flooring decisions are about more than looks. You should consider comfort, beauty, and durability.

Good things are meant to last. That’s certainly true of vintage rugs. By definition, vintage rugs are those between 30 and 80 years old. Though some say it can be extended to include rugs between 25 and 100 years old.

Vintage rugs come in many types, usually patchwork, distressed, or overdyed. These knotted rugs are typically identified by the place they were made in, such as Turkey’s Central Anatolia.

For heirloom pieces you can pass down, consider rugs made by hand. These tactile investment pieces have been valued across the world for many years. Handmade rugs are made according to different processes, which changes the look and feel of the final product. What’s more, how they’re made will also determine their cost, as well as how long they’re likely to last.

The hand rugs are generally one of two types – those that are hand tufted, or those that are hand knotted. Carpets knotted by hand, such as Persian rugs, are the most labour intensive, hence they’re more costly.

In any room, luxury rugs can make a considerable style statement. For example, in an exotic themed room, one with an ornate pictorial design will be the most admired work of art in the space. Something with a non-traditional, geometric shape will suit a modernist aesthetic. In a spacious living room with parquet flooring and high-end furniture, a rug with an interesting origin story will be the perfect conversation starter.
