Console tables – those shallow, slender and often tall furniture items – are great for storage or décor displays in small or under-used spaces that are too narrow for a regular table

While console tables can be used in various places, they look great in an entryway or hallway, to store things like keys and umbrellas, while adding visual impact. Display fresh flowers, picture frames, and candles, hang a mirror above, and keep a basket below to house useful items. Consoles with cabinets give you even more  space, to choose according to your storage needs.

Decorators and chair designers have guidelines for consoles in the living room: They should be placed flush behind a sofa. Use yours to hold books, lamps or flower vases, and hide the back of your couch. Its height should not be higher than the sofa back.

Also in the living room, you can use yours as a TV stand table. The TV stand table can make or break the look of your living room, so choose wisely. It should reflect the overall décor theme of your home. If your ceilings are low, choose a lower console to lengthen the room. Avoid clutter around your television, as it distracts from the entertainment. Keep décor items to a minimum. A unique lamp or some candles, and one or two décor items in a material that contrasts with the console’s material should do the trick. If you’re going for a luxury furniture look, consider an item with glamorous gold accents.

In smaller spaces, consoles can also double up as desks. Just check the bottom of the design, to ensure there’s comfortable, unobstructed space for your legs and feet.
