End tables are undervalued pieces of furniture that make daily living more comfortable, whichever the room. So much so, some call them the ‘unsung heroes’ in a room. So what, exactly, are they? The clue is in the name. They’re small items of furniture that are placed at the end of any other piece of furniture. They should ideally be at arm height, when seated, and are usually smaller than side tables. This makes them ideal for tucking into corners where other furniture may not fit.

End tables for living room décor should be around two inches above or below the arm of a sofa. They’re great for placing refreshments, reading material, lamps and, if they have drawers, for keeping your nick-knacks organised and out of sight. In a contemporary room, choose a simple and understated geometric shape. For example, cute cube tables with stainless-steel legs and marble tops would work well in a chic, modern space in neutral hues. Some of these come in a stack, so you have a couple in varying sizes on hand for using if and when you need them.

Do you have high-end furniture? Then you can choose end tables that are a bit more showy. Something that makes a statement – such as a cube finished with smoke grey mirrors – will be the star of the show.

End tables can also work in spaces too small for a console table. For example, in a narrow entrance or hallway in a farmhouse-style home, a wooden tray-top style can be used for storing keys and displaying a couple of family photo frames.
